"The Olden Days"

New Days

Next Generation!
Next Generation!

Why Did I Wait For Daddy to Come Home?

Two Sisters Waiting for Daddy to Come Home

from work

Sitting on curb, at the end of our Street.

Why? I ask myself now.

He had no idea, clueless to our admiration.

It was the Olden days,

things were different then.

I see it so crystal clear now,

It was sick, I know but back then it was right

Until the golden sun set at night.

When He finally turned into out Street,

We giggled and ran, laughing all the way to our house.

He did not stop to give us a ride,

No hugs or kisses when we got to the house and inside,

God knows what He was thinking about.

We always found out, though.

Good thoughts or bad, back then we did not care,

He was home!

Dinner was quiet, He did not ask how our day went.

Selfish and cruel is all I remember,

Mom put us to bed early in our baby-dolls.

No air-conditioning, we were so hot

To pass the time we sang,

Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Moon River.

He did not say goodnight,

Gone, off to his friends house.

Mom was quiet,

Finally they got a T.V.!

The joy of the night,

T.V. became their friend,

Forgetting about the two little ones trying to sleep in the heat.

Reflecting back,

He taught me how not to parent my own.

The dark, quiet, hot air

The coldness felt throughout,

The Olden Days.

I left at 17, rented a room advertised

a few Towns away. No good-byes.

Peacefulness found.

My Sister never forgave me for leaving her there,

No more singing at night, she left and stayed at her best friends HOME.

Those were the Olden Days,

Now I have memories of tucking my three in for the night.

Knowing I did it right.

Odd, what He taught me,

To be the family I dreamed of back then,

Came true, full circle with love this time.

Oh! He knew.

Now I watch my daughter tuck in her four year old,

Love, joy, and happy dreams.

No sweating or singing,

I was determined I guess.

The Olden Days are gone,

Leaving a legacy of beautiful rainbows,

and music for generations to come.

Amazing,

The New Days are joyful!

The Olden Days can stay Olden,

forever.

Back in good old days

Kids had so much fun

Times they could play

In the morning sun

When the sun awoke

Time to leap out of beds

Run to the window

Sun shined on their heads

Bounce out the door

Whether rain or shine

Danced in the backyard

OkMom, this tugged at my heart! It seems I could feel what you were writing, and I think of others that struggled with probably very similar stories. Its heartbreaking to recall so much, and I wonder what parents were dealing with that some made the decisions they did.

Thank you for sharing this, and I hope it helps others to heal and grow and be great parents or family members. The time goes by so fast, and children are so precious and our future. I love the picture as well, so sweet!

warm_whispers,Thank you for sharing some of the positive memories from the good old days!

oceansunsets, I appreciate your comments and feedback. Last night my youngest was questioning me about "the olden days." As I talked my way around the good times, I wrote the poem as a way of venting my struggles, keeping them out of our conversation. You posed a great question which lead me to more insight and understanding! Thank you.

What a perfect example of how cycles can be broken. Today does not have to be like yesterday, and there is nothing to stop each of us from always reaching out for the life we want to have. A reminder, too, that good things often spring from difficult situations. Remembering that can sometimes be a help in getting through challenging times. You have a lovely family, I wish you all the best.
